Management tips

Short, field-tested ideas to help you think more clearly this week.

  1. Cash before profit

A profitable business can still fail for lack of cash. Each week, look at what comes in and goes out over the next 13 weeks, not just last month’s income statement.

  2. One number per area, every Monday

Pick a single indicator per area (sales, cash, on-time delivery) and review it in 15 minutes at the start of the week. A few numbers you always look at beat fifty you never do.

  3. Sort before you decide

Rank customers, products or suppliers by value (ABC). A few of them usually carry most of the weight. That’s where your attention goes first.

  4. Write the process down before automating it

If you can’t explain a process in ten steps on one page, AI will only make the mess faster. Clarity first, tools second.

  5. Every meeting ends with an owner and a date

A decision without an owner or a deadline is just a conversation. Close each meeting by reading out loud who does what, by when.

  6. Review your prices at least once a year

Your costs change whether you watch them or not. If your prices haven’t moved in years, you’re probably giving away margin without deciding to.

  7. Invoice the same day

Every day between delivery and invoice is a free loan to your customer. Invoice on delivery and follow up on day one past due, kindly and without embarrassment.

  8. Start AI with the boring stuff

Don’t start with your most strategic problem. Start with a repetitive, low-risk task, using sample data. Confidence is built on small wins.
